For Colored Girls....
Hey guys I know I've been slacking a bit in my posting, but I've been somewhat busy with Bigs United as Co-chair of Events (bbm dance), building a relationship with my new little sister( I'm also a mentor within the organization) and also with work, but on this brisk November Tuesday I wanted to take this opportunity to weigh in on another debate of Black Women vs. Black Man Pt. 1,000,000,000.This time the controversy is centered around the Ntzoke Shange play turned Tyler Perry film "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf".The film centers chronicles eight womens' lives as they struggle with the rollercoasters of life and the pain they've experienced. There are many disturbing scenes throughout the movie including ones which feature child homicide, rape, abortion, abandonment and radical religion. The many changes each women go through also involve the men in their life, which leads to the subject of controversy.Let me start by saying I have not read the book or seen the play prior to seeing the movie so I have no frame of reference to how the women and the men were supposed to be portrayed. However, I loved it. I laughed, I cried. I thought it was great and although I understand where men may feel they were not positively depicted, the sad reality is that those stories were those womens' truth, as well as many other women across the world. It's upsetting that everytime a woman tells her story, she's man bashing. Men should take the time to sympathize with women and CHANGE our experiences with them instead of criticizing us and those who give us a voice for sharing them.
I'm well aware that alot of men aren't like those featured in For Colored Girls, and there are also some women who haven't been through such pain. At the end of the day it's a movie, not a representation of ALL colored girls or "boys", just a few.
